Amiga is back You'd need to be in your thirties to remember the Amiga and even then it's a stretch. Back in the late 80s this was the computer that was setting the world on fire, post-Commodore 64.

And this platform that was a result of the need to get the Commodore series of home computer more serious and graphics-capable was made completely obsolete when Microsoft's Windows came along and dominated computing for the next two decades.

The Amiga X1000 system is coming out at a hefty $2000 and must be for serious fans of the old platform because no one really needs to pay that much for a desktop system anymore.

But to be fair, you are getting a good bit of bang for your buck with;

  • Dual-core 2GHz PowerISA CPU (PowerPC architecture)
  • Xena 500MHz XMOS companion processor with Xorro connector
  • AMD Radeon 4650 GPU
  • 1GB DDR2 RAM
  • 500GB HDD
  • 2 PCIe x16 slots, 4 DIMM slots, 4x SATA 2, 10x USB 2.0

This is one for the fans. It's never going to set the world on fire. And the operating system just doesn't have enough meat to keep the modern computer user going (not to mention the lack of software available for it). The rest of us can keep calm and carry on with our Windows and iDevices. For now.

Amiga is back
