The mystery of a car sunken off Cunningham Pier has finally been solved.

The white Mercedes 4WD left locals scratching their heads after it was found in Corio Bay on Friday morning.

Turns out it's owner, KOBI GOZLAN, accidentally had the car in drive instead of reverse when he was parking at the pier on Thursday night.

He’s told the Geelong Advertiser he managed to escape and swim to safety because he had his windows down.
