Geelong and Werribee are emerging as the state’s dementia hotspots, with the number of cases expected to soar by 2050.
Alzheimer's Australia’s latest predictions suggest the number of people in Geelong living with Alzheimer's will more than triple over the next thirty-eight years. Statewide almost a quarter-of-a-million new cases will be diagnosed over that period. The number of suffers in the Geelong region is currently just over 3,400 but that’s tipped to be close to 12,000 by 2050, one of the highest growth rates in Victoria. And the number of cases in neighbouring Wyndham is expected to rise by a staggering 530 per cent over the same time frame. Alzheimer’s Australia says the state government must act early to minimise the social and economic impact. It’s calling for more investment in specialist care, better education for carers and counselling in regional areas.
