Mums and dads are being advised to start making arrangements for the their kids for next Thursday with teachers set to strike over pay.
96 per cent of Education Union members in Victoria have voted to support industrial action, after nine months of talks with the state government that have gotten nowhere. More than 100 schools across the state will be closed, with some of those likely to be in Geelong, Werribee and the Surf Coast. But the full extent of the strike won’t be known until next week when school principals begin organising staff rosters and class schedules. Many students may find themselves with 5 days off in a row, with next Thursday’s stoppage to be followed by a student-free day on Friday, and the Queen’s Birthday holiday the following Monday. Despite promising teachers a 30 per cent pay rise over three years before the state election, the BAILLIEU government now says the increase is unaffordable.
