Two local councils brace for carbon hit

Rubbish Geelong and Wyndham councils are being warned to expect a carbon tax hit when the new levy comes into force from the end of this month.

The two municipalities have made it onto a list of the Australia's top 500, thanks to their large landfill facilities.

The effects are expected to be minimal but tip charges are still likely to rise.

The federal opposition claims that will just lead to more illegal dumping.
