Geelong Town Hall Geelong council has been hit with a superannuation bill of more than $23-million.

The liability was caused by a shortfall in an old local government scheme.

Geelong Council was aware of the problem but only allocated $3-million in the current budget.

Surf Coast Shire is also affected with a debt of $2.5-million.
