Asbestos found near a North Geelong cliff could be capped rather than removed.

Geelong mayor John Mitchell says the city is in negotiations with the Department of Sustainability over the land site, after the dangerous material was found three months ago.

He says the council's already spent $30,000 fixing the area, and it could cost over $200,000 to encapsulate the area if its found to be stable.
