Jacinta Allan has resigned as premier of Victoria.
Allan announcing this morning she would stand aside from the role after meetings with her colleagues.
It comes following a weekend meeting between members of the party which agreed Allan did not have the support of the party to remain in the role as premier.
Allan was met by colleagues yesterday who asked her to resign, a call she initially rejected.
However this morning she made the call to exit the role.
“I have made the difficult decision to step aside as leader of the parliamentary Labor party and as premier of Victoria,” she said.
“I am making this decision because it is the right thing for the Labor party and for the Victorian people.
“I was prepared to put my record and my plan to a ballot of members as our rules allow. I believe I would have won.
“But doing so this close to an election takes up valuable resources, including the most precious – time.”
Allan this hour will chair a meeting of the party caucus where Ben Carroll is expected to be made leader.
“Should Ben emerge as our next Labor leader and Labor premier he will have my congratulations and unqualified support.”
Allan has been in parliament since 1999 as member for Bendigo East, and was deputy premier between June 2022 and September 2023 when she took over the premiership from Daniel Andrews.
