The Scorchers were batting at the time, making 2/30.

Heavy rain seeped under the covers and onto the playing surface, with blow dryers used before the the game to bring the pitch up to scratch.

It is the first time in more than 500 BBL matches a game has been called off due to the pitch.

Renegades GM James Rosengarten said their first thoughts were with their fans and were incredibly disappointed in the events.

“We had an important match against the Scorchers and our fans have a right to feel incredibly let down,” he said in a statement.

“It should have been a great night of cricket and we will discuss the outcomes of that in the days ahead.

“The club will ensure that all general public ticket purchasers are refunded”

Kardinia Park Trust CEO Gerard Griffin said they understood the disappointment.

“This is not the experience that Kardinia Park Stadium trust anticipated for the teams or the patrons that came to watch this game,” he said.

Both teams will share the points.
