There are calls for a trial using a direct train service between Geelong and Werribee.

The two councils have written to Public Transport Minister Vicki Ward, advocating for the immediate trial, rerouting the existing Warrnambool services through Werribee.

Under the proposal, the Melbourne-Warrnambool services would go through Werribee, instead of Wyndham Vale.

The council say it would provide a direct rail connection without waiting for major new infrastructure to be built.

Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said it was a practical first step towards better connecting the growing communities.

“We know the long-term case for reconnecting Geelong and Werribee is strong, but our communities shouldn’t have to wait years to start seeing the benefits,” Cr Kontelj said.

“This trial makes use of the infrastructure and services we already have, while giving us an opportunity to demonstrate what a direct connection could mean for commuters.

“Better connections between Geelong and Melbourne’s west mean better access to jobs, education, healthcare, economic and social opportunities. That’s something worth acting on now.”
