A solar panel installer has been fined $35,000 after WorkSafe found two workers on a roof in Leopold without sufficient safety gear.

AI Solar and Electircal Service pleaded guilty this month n a Geelong court to two charges of failing to maintain a safe workplace.

WorkSafe says an inspector saw two workers on the roof in 2021, with no guard railing installed.

Only one of the workers were loosely tethered to the structure.

The safety watchdog says there was also no lifting equipment to help with moving solar panels onto the roof, which was more than 5m off the ground.

Narelle Beer from WorkSafe said employers had a responsibility to ensure safe work methods were in place for those jobs at a height.

“369 Victorian construction workers have been seriously injured this year falling from heights, with many left suffering life altering injuries,” Dr Beer said.

“We know how to prevent falls, and we know the devastating cost of not preventing them, so it beggars belief that anyone would ignore safety when working at heights.”
