POLICE and local law officers have been forced to ask a group of people camping near the Barwon River to move on.

Geelong Council says it received community complaints late last year about people sleeping rough in Barwon Valley Park.

The City confirmed the people have been moved on and support services will help them find a better place to stay.

“In response to community complaints in late November and early December, police and our Local Law officers asked a small number of people who had set up camp to vacate from a location beside the Barwon River,” Acting Executive Director City Life Amanda Locke said.

“Support services have been in contact with the people involved to assist them in finding alternative accommodation.”

The maximum penalty for illegal camping, if prosecuted, is a $1500 fine – 15 penalty units.
