UPDATE: Man arrested as Corio siege ends

A man has been arrested following a lengthy siege in Corio.

Geelong Broadcasters understands the suspect has been treated on-scene for the effects of tear gas but there have been no other injuries.

Emergency services were called to Horne Square just after 11.30am Sunday after receiving reports of a possible firearm incident.

Police say a man and woman were barricaded inside a home and had refused to talk to officers.

The woman left the home around 3pm and was believed to be unharmed.

She has been helping officers with their enquiries.

The Critical Incident Response Team eventually made contact after using loudhailers to talk to the man contact the man, who is believed he to be known to police.

Police are understood to have deployed tear gasin an attempt to force the man out.

Some witnesses told our newsroom the occupant had thrown knives at police, although this has not been confirmed.

Several nearby streets qere blocked off at the height of the stand-off.
