Geelong council has put a hold on its naming policy.
The policy – which would prioritise the names of indigenous, female and gender diverse people when naming new assets – was set to pass at last night’s meeting.
However council voted to defer the vote until next month.

Mayor Stretch Kontelj told Geelong Broadcasters it was important to have further discussion internally.
He added while it was unlikely that the council would come to a unanimous vote on the matter, it was important that the subject was covered fully.
