Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj says the rail service between Geelong, Werribee and Melbourne in particular is an item the two councils are on the same page about.

“That would reintroduce a passenger service through Werribee,” he said.

“That helps in terms of servicing Avalon, and also helps in terms of the travel times between Melbourne and Geelong.”

Kontelj says an outer metropolitan ring road would also be a major benefit for the region.

“That would connect Melbourne airport and Avalon airport through Werribee,” he said.

“Projects like that have a major impact for our region, so its something we will advocate on together.”

The mayor also says he is looking at the prospect of a trackless tram between Marshall and Torquay, which involves conversations with the Surf Coast shire.

“Connecting through Asmrtrong Creek through to Marshall is the thought,” he says.

“It’s similar to what you see in Adelaide between the city and Glenelg beach.”

The state election is slated for November.
