Deakin descendants fight auction of PM’s former home

A campaign’s underway to have the historic Point Lonsdale home of former Prime Minister Alfred Deakin handed over to the National Trust or his university namesake.

A dispute over the future of Ballara, built in 1907, is headed to the Victorian Civil Administrative Tribunal, with half the property’s owners wanting it sold.

Deakin’s great-grandson Tom Harley is leading the push to prevent it being auctioned off, and he’s hoping to raise money to buy out those wanting to sell.

His mother is one of eight to have ownership over the site, but she’s among the minority wanting to keep it.

The site is currently under assessment for heritage listing, but that process is ongoing.
