Two pillars on Geelong’s Eastern Beach Grand Staircase are being removed, following structural concerns.
The City of Greater Geelong says the structure was built in 1929, and flagged the potential removal of the two pillars in July.
James Stirton from the city said they had made the decision following further analysis and talks with Heritage Victoria.
“As always, public safety remains our primary consideration,” he said.
“The rest of the staircase is still safe to use for now, and temporary safety fencing will remain in place.
We are continuing to work with experts on the planning, detailed design, heritage requirements, and permit process for the renewal of the grand staircase.”
