A Geelong business has been issued with a please explain after an ugly brown stain appeared on Corio Bay on the city’s waterfront.

Several people contacted the Geelong Broadcasters newsroom on Monday morning after spotting the outflow near Griffins Gully Pier at Western Beach.

Some witnesses believed the contaminated water flowing from a drain may have been paint, while others feared it may have been oil.

Inspectors from the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) later visited the site and collected samples.

The environmental watchdog contacted our newsroom late Monday to say the stream was “sediment” that had escaped from a local worksite.

The authority said it has been in contact with the business responsible.
