Temporary fencing has been installed around parts of the Grand Staircase at Geelong’s Eastern Beach.
The staircase was opened in 1929.
The City of Greater Geelong says comprehensive concrete testing and coring were undertaken by independent experts during the week, looking at the structural condition of the historic structure.
Active Chief Executive Anthony Basford said due to concrete cancer, concerns have been identified with light pillars.
“As a result, we have taken immediate action to fence off sections of handrail, which pose the greatest risk of structural failure with further protection to follow in the coming days,” he said.
“At this stage, the staircase is safe to use, with the main concerns relating to the light pillars and their associated handrails, but engineers will continue to monitor the situation closely.
“Discussions are now underway with Heritage Victoria about the future of the staircase, including the potential removal of the two most severely affected pillars.”
