Emergency services have sounded a fire warning as Geelong and the Surf Coast prepare to see in the New year.
Official fireworks displays have been planned for this evening. However, there are concerns some might be tempted to set off their own illegal fireworks in celebration.
That has the CFA concerned that it may be a ‘fiery’ start to the year for its volunteer fire fighters.
Acting Assistant Chief Fire Officer for District 7 Wayne Aylmer says its almost inevitable they will be called out to a blaze sparked by fireworks. More than 280 fireworks incidents resulted in fires last year.
“We’re certainly very concerned about the dryness of our landscape,” he said.
” You only need to lool around our district at the moment.
“It’s very dry. The grass is dry and there’s plenty of it.
“Any firework activity is likely to lead to some type of grassfire.
“Over the years, we’ve also seen a lot of people injured in that type of activity. So, not only do we end up with fires, we end up with people getting hurt as well.”
Those setting off illegal fireworks have been warned they could face prosecution. Just lighting illegal fireworks can cost you $47,000 and 2 years in jail —or 15 or more years if it goes wrong
