Jacinta Allan says Geelong continues to play a key role in fuel supply for the state.
The Premier met with staff at Viva’s Corio refinery on Friday, saying the region has a major role to play.
“Geelong is really critical to this national discussion we are having about the security of our fuel supply,” Ms Allan said.
“(Viva) is a big and important employer – more than 1,000 people work there and it is just another reminder about important it is to really back and support local jobs, local capabilities.”
It comes as fuel supplies are reassuring Victorians extra shipments are on their way.
Viva supplies around half of the state’s fuel, and CEO Scott Wyatt said the company did not rely on deliveries from the Middle East.
He said there was stock to last several months.
“That’s not to say there won’t be times when things are tight, and it is quite obviously tight at the moment, and it may cause some short term disruptions,” he said.
“But that’s more about short term waiting for vessels to arrive in the country than running out of fuel, so people need to be calm.”
The government’s Servo Saver app has prices sitting between $2.49 and $2.59 a litre for unleaded across Geelong.
