Geelong and Surf Coast residents have played their part in one billion drink containers being saved from landfill.
Western Victoria has now had one billion containers returned through the the container desposit scheme, with Geelong and the Surf Coast making a major contribution to the tally.
A TOMRA Cleanaway spokesperson said millions had ended up back in the pockets of locals
“In Greater Geelong alone, residents have returned more than 132,087,103 million eligible drink
containers through a network of 12 refund points,” they said.
“That’s roughly 487 containers for every person in the Great Geelong area and thousands donated to help local charities fund everything from new footy jumpers and school excursions to equipment.”
TOMRA Cleanaway CEO James Dorney said it was a major achievement.
“This one billion milestone is a testament to the power of collective action,” he said.
“Every bottle, can and carton returned in communities like Geelong helps keep local streets and waterways clean, reduces landfill, and provides a steady stream of funding for local charities and partners.”
Points around Geelong and the Surf Coast remain open for the disposal of drink containers.
