Geelong rally calls for Gaza ceasefire

Hundreds of people have marched through Geelong’s CBD calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

The rally by Free Palestine Geelong was held in Little Malop Street on Saturday.

The crowd then marched to the electoral office of Corio MP Richard Marles.

There has been continued fighting in the Gaza strip for more than a month following a Hamas attack on Israeli soil.

Yasir Ismat from the group said they heard from several speakers, including Muslim and Christian Palestinians.

He said the aim was to awareness of the issue in the Middle East.

“We’re often not aware of what’s going on in Palestine,” he said.

“We just want to tell the story of Palestinian people from Palestinian peoples’ point of view.”

It comes as a second group of Israeli hostages were released Sunday morning, local time by Hamas.

The 13 hostages were handed to the Red Cross and will make their way to Egypt.

Israel is set to release 39 Palestinian prisoners.

The temporary ceasefire is expected to last four days, but Israel says that can continue if more hostages are released.
