Delays are coming to the Great Ocean Road for the next eight months.

An upgrade is coming to the tourist icon, with the Spout Creek bridge to be replaced.

The bridge having first been built in in the 1950s was later expanded in the 70s, and is now set for more work.

“In addition to the new bridge deck, new bridge railings will be installed to boost safety, while the height of the road on the approach to the bridge will be raised to meet the height of the new bridge,” a statement from the government said.

It’s part of a six million dollar project for the stretch of road.

Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne said the works were essential for the region.

“Great Ocean Road is a vital link for more than six million tourists each year and the many coastal communities that rely on it – this bridge replacement at Spout Creek will ensure this iconic route remains safe and accessible for everyone,” she said.

Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney said it would make the facility better for locals.

“After decades of service, we’re retiring the old bridge at Spout Creek with a brand new structure to keep our community moving and avoid the need for load limits in the future.”
