Guns crackdown across region

A police crackdown on illegal weapons has led to charges against four men in the Geelong region, and the seizure of eight firearms.

Police say the Viper taskforce uncovered five weapons on one property at Little River, two at a home at St Albans Park and another at a home in Whittington.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Jaime Gillard of Geelong Crime Investigation Unit said these kinds of investgations are essential.

“These operations keep the heat on those prohibited from possessing a firearm due to their criminal history and criminal associations, with eight firearms successfully removed from the wrong hands,” he said.

“Our message to those with FPOs is clear – you can be searched anytime by police.

“We will continue to work with specialist resources such as the VIPER Taskforce to target those who are known to use or carry illicit firearms.”
