Just one week after the City of Greater Geelong was forced to close its Leisurelink pools for a day, health authorities are warning of an increase in cryptosporidiosis (crypto) cases in Victoria.

Council staff poured extra chlorine into the pools at its Waurn Ponds facility last Wednesday night, after being notified three people with crypto had been at the facility in the prior three weeks.

Leisurelink opened last Friday.

The Victorian Health Department says some people have been infected after using public swimming pools across the state.

Crypto is a type of gastro caused by Cryptosporidium and is highly resistant to levels of chlorine normally found in pools.

Locals are being urged to not swim if they have had diarrhoea in the last fortnight, and to shower and wash with soap before swimming.
