A social media post has brought good news for the family and friends of Grovedale teacher Layton McCann, who fell seriously ill while on an overseas honeymoon.
He and new wife Whitney were travelling through America and Mexico last month, when Layton fell ill with a severe case of acute pancreatitis.
It left him in a critical condition.
He spent days hooked up to a ventilator in a Mexican hospital Intensive Care Unit.
The Geelong community rallied around the couple, with a GoFundMe appeal raising $40,000 for his treatment, accommodation and return to Australia.
That finally happened in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
“After a long and exhaustive journey, Layton was brought home to Australia with a nurse escort,” the post raed.
“He was then taken to Geelong hospital to continue his recovery.
“Since arriving, the medical team has started fresh with blood tests, X-rays, and CT scans, and he is now being closely monitored.
“We are beyond grateful that he is back on Australian soil, surrounded by the care he needs.”
His family has posted a message to social media thanking everyone for the “continued love, support, and generosity—it truly means the world to them”.
