Locals in and around Lara have been left to swelter in 40-degree heat without power, as temperatures soar across the region to start the week.
It’s understood power at dozens of homes in Lara has been out since mid-Monday morning, with Powercor informing customers earlier that it expected power to be restored by midday.
As of around 3pm, around 50 homes are still without power, with the authority not updating the community since an earlier text message saying power would be restored at 1pm.
Powercor’s website also suggests widespread power outages around the Bannockburn area.
Lara local Amanda said the communication from the power authority has been disgraceful, leaving locals concerned given the extremely hot temperatures.
“It’s been really, really hot, stifling at 41 degrees heat with no power,” she said.
“I’m worried about all the food in our fridge and freezers, we might lose them.
“(Powercor) told us it was going to be back on at 11:00, and then 11:30, and the 1pm and we still haven’t had any others news.
“They charge us a fortune for power and when we need it, it’s not there.
“We’re all stifling in our homes, it’s not good enough, definitely not good enough.”
Powercor said crews have been on the ground throughout the afternoon, working to restore power as soon as possible.
“Powercor crews are on the ground repairing damaged equipment in Rennie St, Lara affecting electricity supply to local properties,” a spokesperson said.
“Customers have advised to prepare for an extended outage into this evening.
“We are working to restore power as quickly as possible.”
The latest update according to Powercor’s information on its outage map suggests power mightn’t be restored in Lara until 6.30pm.
