Geelong’s Socceroos fans unable to head to the World Cup are being offered the next best thing.
Johnstone Park has been locked in for the Australian’s opening match against Turkiye on Sunday, June 14.
There will also be live sites in Melbourne and across regional Victoria.
Mayor Stretch Kontelj said councillors and businesses had been supportive of having a live site in the region for the games.
However he said the newly built Convention Centre was not an option.
“That doesn’t open officially until the first July,” he said.
There is no word just yet on whether Geelong will also have live sites for Australia’s other group matches against the USA and Paraguay.
AAMI Park and Federation Square in Melbourne will be showing all three games.
The Victorian government says the sites will be free for fans to enjoy the atmosphere of a major match.
