A Geelong lobby group has come out against a proposed waste-to-energy facility in Lara.

The Committee for Geelong has come to its conclusion after holding a forum in February, hearing from the proponents and those against the project.

It says the consensus is the project does not align with its vision and aspirations for the city.

The local group says it is worried about the volume of waste needed to operate, which could see Geelong become the destination for waste from across Victoria.

There are also concerns over the proximity of the proposed site to houses in Lara and potential health impacts for the community, including air quality and residual particles on produce.

The Committee says there is a broader discussions needed around whether waste to energy has a place in Victoria’s energy transition, which it says it currently does not have a view.
