Strike action will hit major ports across the country today including Geelong.

Workers at Quantem Bulk Liquids will be stopping work for an hour, trying to raise the issue of underpaid workers in some terminals.

Bulk Liquds Alliance organiser Shane Reside said the dispite started in Geelong, and has spread to almost every major port in the country.

“Management at Quantem Bulk Liquids are attempting to slash wages by a staggering $25,000 a year in their Geelong Terminal in what is the biggest single attack on workers in the industry in living memory,” he said.

“These workers entered negotiations simply wanting to keep the existing arrangements in place, and seek very modest pay increases.

“Rather than negotiate with us like adults, management has doubled down and is insisting that their intention is to slash pay by more than $25,000 a year, and gut superannuation contributions by more than $6000.”

The local stop work will be held from 4pm today.
