Locals gather for Pilk Purriyn

A truth telling dawn event has been held on the Surf Coast.

Locals gathered in Torquay for Pilk Purriyn on Friday morning, presented by the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, who said it was a time for deep listening and reflection.

Pilk Purriyn means sunrise in Wadawurrung language.

The event was supported by the Surf Coast Shire, which is not providing any official Australia Day events.

The City of Greater Geelong is also not holding any official ceremonies or citizenship ceremonies on January 26.

However it has provided some support for a family day being held at Rippleside today.

While the councils are not holding Australia Day events, some local communities have held breakfasts this morning and are planning other events.

Surf Coast councillor Paul Barker is holding an Australia Day community barbecue at Elephant Walk today, saying he has received support.
