Lara residents have been joined by politicians against a proposed waste incinerator.

The Environment Protection Authority granted a development licence to the proponents of the proposed waste-to-energy plant in December.

Residents though claim the incinerator would be bigger than Kardinia Park, with a chimney more than 80m tall.

They say the plant, if given the nod by Victoria’s Planning Minister, would burn through thousands of tonnes of waste, including plastic, at the foot of the You Yangs.

Politicians, including Labor MP Ella George, Greens MP Sarah Mansfield and Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson spoke at the rally on Sunday morning.

It called for the minister to reject the proposal, with rally organiser Charles Street said there would be a significant impact on local health.

“We are just absolutely determined to stop this,” he told Nine.

“We regard the awarding of the licence as completely unfathomable and we are going to fight it until it’s revoked.”
