The man accused of mowing down two men, killing one and seriously injuring another outside the Melbourne Showgrounds on Saturday has faced court.

The 33-year-old from Werribee has made no application for bail.

“Three male pedestrians were leaving a comic convention when a blue Toyota Echo sedan allegedly mounted a kerb on Langs Road and struck two of the men just before 5pm,” police said in a statement.

“One of the pedestrians, a 20-year-old Keysborough man, died at the scene.

“The second, a 20-year-old man, remains in hospital with significant lower body injuries.

“The third pedestrian, a 20-year-old man, managed to avoid being struck but was taken to hospital for observation.

“It’s alleged the Toyota continued east along the footpath, before a female off-duty police officer and member of the public intervened and conducted a citizen’s arrest.”

He will return to court in September.
