The Geelong suburb of Marshall could double in size after the City of Greater Geelong gave the green light to the development of a huge parcel of land.
It will include as many as 1500 new medium and high-density homes, as well as commercial developments.
The plan, which has been in the pipeline for four years, has the potential to see Marshall’s population grow by 5000 – doubling the number of current residents.
It would also put Marshall on track to exceed the current expectation of 18,000 residents by 2041.
Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan told Tuesday night’s council meeting the 123ha project would feature a mix of apartments, town houses and social housing.
“(It) will provide opportunities for new residents to settle in the area and help ease housing affordability pressures,” said Cr Sullivan.
“Greater Housing diversity, local employment opportunities and habitat protection are the key elements of the precinct plan.”
The mayor said it would also “provide improved access and use to the station and encourage walking and cycling.”
