A Greater Geelong teen is among those charged over a fatal stabbing in Melbourne’s outer north.
Police said a group of teens allegedly tried to rob a 14-year-old boy at Mernda Station just before 6pm on Friday when bystanders intervened.
Among them was a 22-year-old Mernda man, who walked the 14-year-old outside the station and away from the scene, Detective Acting Inspector Nigel L’Estrange from the Homicide Squad said.
“Unfortunately those four offenders followed both of them and then, in what could only be described as a savage attack, assaulted the 22-year-old male, physically using both fists, kicking, and they used edged weapons that we are aware of,” he said.
“And as a result of that, he received some fatal stab wounds.”
A 17-year old boy from the Greater Geelong area and a 16-year-old boy from the Whittlesea area have both been charged with murder and armed robbery, set to appear at a children’s court at a later date.
An 18-year-old Mill Park man has been charged with murder and armed robbery and will face the Melbourne Magistrate’s Court on 8 March.
A 17-year-old from the City of Yarra is yet to be interviewed, remaining under police guard at hospital.
Detective Acting Inspector Nigel L’Estrange said ambulance crews treated the 22-year-old but he died at the scene.
“This is just a tragic situation where our victim here is just a good Samaritan who tried to do the right thing,” he said.
“He’s intervened, tried to protect this 14-year-old schoolboy, hasn’t been aggressive at all, tried to remove him from the scene, and as a result of his interaction, he’s lost his life.”
