A new public high school for Mount Duneed in the latest government budget pledges.
The state today announcing efforts to acquire land in the area to begin the project.
Parliamentary secretary for education Nina Taylor said work was underway to obtain the land.
“We have that funding in the budget,” she said.
“We’re well and truly on the path to that project now.”
Labor South Barwon candidate Rebecca Thistleton says having high schools in the area is essential.
“Families want to be able to send their kids to a great local high school,” she said.
“We’ve seen some wonderful primary schools built in this region recently, but now we’re also focusing on the high school aspect.
“It means kids will be able to stay in their region and go to school with kids they went to primary school with.”
The state funding will also see upgrades at several schools across the state, including Surfside Primary School in Ocean Grove.
Member for Bellarine Alison Marchant said this was an outstanding outcome.
“I’m proud to be delivering a competition grade gymnasium for Surfside Primary School,” she said.
“This will mean more space for students to learn, be active and gather together as a school community.”
