New Year’s Eve celebrations have been marred by fireworks related incidents across the state, including in Geelong and of the Surf Coast.
Victoria Police have reported 313 fireworks related jobs across Victoria with some victims suffering life-changing injuries to end 225 on a low note.
A 43-year-old Corio man has sustained a significant injury to his finger during an ‘at home’ fireworks display, while a Point Cook man suffered burns from illegal fireworks.
In Lorne, a 16-year-old boy was questioned by police after a flare was thrown during the planned 9.30pm fireworks display. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
Police say it’s disappointing so many people across the state took risks with illegal and dangerous fireworks.
However, they say they’re generally happy with crowd behaviour as Victorians celebrated the New Year.
No major incidents have been recorded in Geelong and on the Surf Coast, with big crowds gathering on Geelong’s waterfront to bring in 2026.
