Local police are promising to crackdown on drink and drug driving over the AFL Grand Final long weekend, with Geelong Highway Patrol officers taking part in Operation Scoreboard.

Police say to expect a highly visible presence on local roads and highways, as we celebrate a long weekend of footy celebrations, warm weather and the end to school holidays.

Geelong Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Jamie Davidson, is expecting the weekend to be extremely busy, particularly along the Surf Coast.

“The beaches are back open again for everyone from Melbourne and from the east, everyone comes across,” Acting Sgt Davidson said.

“We’re just reminding everyone to slow down and take it easy,” he said.

“We’ve got Operation Scoreboard running this whole weekend.”

Operation Scoreboard is running statewide up until 11:59pm Sunday, with police warning there will be zero tolerance for drink and drug driving, and motorists should expect to be tested while out on the roads this weekend.

“Footy is important and everybody likes to get amongst it but if you’re going to go somewhere get a designated driver, Ubers, taxis,” Acting Sgt Davidson said.
