“Police will be out in force, with high visibility patrols,” he said.

“We’ll be targeting speeding, impaired drivers, distraction offences, fatigue and seatbelt offences.”

Acting Sr Sgt Patralakis urged drivers to be patient as more people hit the region, especially the Surf Coast.

Meantime, paramedics are also bracing for a busy few days, and the emotional toll it can take on them.

Ambulance Victoria’s Acting Barwon South West regional director Jess McGowan also urging drivers to be extra careful.

“As paramedics, we see the devastating effects of road trauma, and we don’t want to be attending people and we don’t want to see that tragic loss of life through road trauma,” she said.

“Especially through the long weekend where we know the road usage is higher.”

Operation Nexus is operating until 11.59pm Monday.
