Police probe Truganina hit-run death

The Western Freeway remains partially closed at Truganina following the death of a man in a suspected hit-run.

Police believe he was involved in a minor collision with a road barrier late on Tuesday night and had stepped out of his vehicle to inspect the damage, when he was struck by another passing car.

The second driver failed to stop.

Police remained on the scene overnight, with the Ballarat-bound lanes of the Freeway closed between Christies Road, Ravenhall and Hopkins Road, Truganina.

Motorists travelling from Melbourne to Ballarat are being directed off the freeway at Christies Road, with a series of detours bringing them back onto the highway at Melton.

Last night’s fatality was the fourth on Victorian roads in the space of 12 hours.

Earlier in the day a driver was killed when their car collided with a truck before rolling and bursting into flames at Lockwood, near Bendigo.

Police are also invesitgating the death of a man after the Toyota Tarago in which he was a passenger collided with a truck in Mildura.

And a man who was critically injured when he was struck by a car at Box Hill on Sunday passed away in hospital on Monday.

Seven people have died in the four days since police launched Operation Roadwise on Friday.

283 people have lost their lives on Victorian roads so far in 2023, 51 more than at the same time last year, and 43 more than for all of 2022.
