Sewerage pipes were blocked by flushable wipes at Eastern Beach (GEELONG BROADCASTERS).

Blockages of pipes at Eastern Beach caused by people flushing wipes has prompted Barwon Water to set embark on public education campaign.

The utility provider is setting up at the popular bayside location today to inform people that only the three P’s should go down the toilet: poo, pee and (toilet) paper.

It follows overflows at Cunnigham Pier and Eastern Beach public toilets over the new year, where city workers needed to clear a metre-long blockage due to the number of wipes being flushed.

“Things like paper towel, tissues, napkins, nappies, cotton buds, sanitary items and wipes belong in the bin,” Barwon Water is reminding people.

“They should not be flushed down the toilet, because they don’t break down like toilet paper and can cause blockages and smelly overflows.”

Staff will be hosting a pop-up information stand at Geelong’s Eastern Beach between 12.30 pm to 3.30 pm today.
