Our region is remembering its role in the life of Makybe Diva.
The three-time Melbourne Cup winner died on Saturday at Gnarwarre after a short battle with colic.
The champion mare’s incredible run began in Werribee, where she claimed her first listed win in the Werribee Cup back in 2002.
Months later she would win her fiorst group one at Flemington, before her run at the great race began the next year.
“Go and find the youngest child here, as that child might be the only person who lives long enough to see something like that again,” trainer Lee Freedman said after she claimed the 2005 Melbourne Cup.
Her former jockey Glen Boss paid tribute on X.
“I was privileged to see her only a couple of months ago,” he said.
“She looked so gorgeous. Her eye was clear, her skin was amazing, her feet were really well.
“But I had a sense at 26-years-old this might be the last time I see her. But what a moment we had.”
