There are calls for the state government to buy Geelong’s Market Square.
Mayor Stretch Kontelj has written to local MPs from both sides of politics, calling on them to start the process of a compulsory acquisition of the CBD site, and work with the council and other stakeholders to deliver a long-term outcome.
He said previous efforts to move forward with owners and other stakeholders, progress has not happened at the pace of the needs of a growing city.
Councillor Kontelj said Market Square could be much bigger than a shopping centre.
“It could be a more vibrant city centre, new investment and jobs, welcoming public spaces, and a place where people can live, work and spend time in the heart of Geelong,” Cr Kontelj wrote on social media.
“The vision is there. The work has been done.”
