Locals are being urged to be careful when going into the water on the Surf Coast, with concerns a whale carcass could attract more sharks.

An Advice has been issued for Apollo Bay and Marengo.

Victorian Fisheries says sharks could be closer to shore than normal due to the carcass in the region.

While sharks are common, the authority says people need to be careful when planning a swim at the beaches in the area.

Anyone who spots a shark in waters at a patrolled beach are being urged to tell lifesavers immediately.

Alternatively, people can call Triple Zero (000).
