Situation eases as fires continue to burn

The local fire situation has begun to ease after multiple emergency situations across the weekend.

Emergency alerts were issued at both Avalon and Bamganie on Friday, with both later downgraded to watch and act.

An advice message remains in place this morning for the Bamganie Meredith area as fire crews work on containment lines.

Fires on the edge of the Otways continue to burn as well, with neighbouring areas including Birregurra and Forest urged to stay informed.

Local CFA brigades have thanked the wider community for their support during recent days.

Barwon Heads brigade took to social media to say their firefighters are off the fire grounds at Mt Mercer and the Otways.

Lara CFA showed its empty fire shed as vehicles were spread across different fires but thanked those who dropped in snacks and drinks.

The situation across the state remains ongoing, with a fire on the Victorian-NSW border at Walwa remaining an emergency situation.

However the blaze at Longwood has now been downgraded to a watch and act.

It’s also been confirmed that a body was located at the Longwood blaze, however the person is yet to be identified.
