A big weekend of junior soccer in Geelong, hosting the Victorian Country Championships over the long weekend.
Teams from across regional Victoria will converge on the region, coming up against local talent.
The games will be played at Myers Reserve in Bell Post Hill, and Stead Park in Corio.
Football Victoria Geelong chair Mike McKinstry said this year’s tournament had record numbers, with a milestone for Geelong’s rep teams.
“Normally, there’s been more boys teams than girls teams, because the game’s been growing over the last few years,” he said.
“But the female participation rates have really come up and this year we’ve got an equal number of girls playing as boys representing Geelong – that’s the first ever.”
Mr McKinstry said the championships were also a big deal for regional centres.
“Most of the other competitions are metropolitan Melbourne, so this is the big one outside of that.
“It’s been great Geelong’s been involved for so many years.”
The tournament will run between June 6-8, and the fixture can be found here.
