Speedsters and car thieves nabbed in police op

Alleged car thieves and dangerous road users have been caught during a police operation in Wyndham.

Operation Shows saw local officers working with specialist units including the Dog Squad and Highway Patrol, targeting car thefts and dangerous driving.

Officers made over 30 arrests in the operation held on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

Five teenagers were among those arrested, after an allegedly stolen car failed to stop in Hoppers Crossing in the early hours of Thursday.

The police chopper followed the vehicle to Laverton, where stop sticks were used on Old Geelong Road.

The 15 to 17-year-olds were arrested and charged with offences including car theft.

An 18-year-old NSW man was arrested after being caught 30km/h over the speed limit in Werribee late Wednesday night.

He is now facing charges while the vehicle was impounded.

A 29-year-old man was arrested in Point Cook on an outstanding warrant over the alleged theft of a car in Werribee earlier this year.

More than 20 fines were also issued for offences including drink driving, speeding and driving while unregistered.

Inspector Rachel Van Someren said scores of police patrolling the streets this week while locals slept.

“We had our eye on car thieves and dangerous drivers in the area,” Inspector Van Someron said.

“With more than 30 offenders caught up with the message is clear – you can’t outrun the police Air Wing.

“The community can be assured we will continue to run targeted operations like Shows to catch car thieves and remove reckless drivers from the roads.”
