More than 20 people have been caught speeding across Geelong during a road police blitz.

Operation West Connect was held in the state’s west last Friday, detecting 157 offences.

Locally 24 drivers were caught over the speed limit.

Police conducted 45 breath tests, and while no-one was drink driving, one motorist was picked up for alleged drug driving.

Other offences in the region included disobeying a traffic sign, using a mobile phone while driving and not wearing a seatbelt.

Inspector Justine Ryan said speeding on regional roads was still a major contributing factor to serious and fatal collisions.

“Yet it’s evident so many motorists are not heeding the warnings as we are continuing to detect far too many people speeding,” Inspector Ryan said.

“We need drivers to slow down and keep to the speed limits, particularly on regional roads – they are in place to keep all road users safe.

“Operation West Connect is an ongoing road policing initiative and motorists should expect to see police out enforcing across major arterials in Western Victoria.”
