Geelong council is reviewing CCTV footage around Eastern Garden’s after a statue of Queen Victoria was vandalised.

The attack on the monument that included the defacing graffiti ‘the colony will fall’ was reported to the city on Friday morning.

By mid afternoon on the same day a city spokesperson say the majority of the red paint had been removed by contractors, who’ll return on Monday for a second attempt to remove the remaining paint at the bottom of the statue.

“We’ve reported the vandalism to Victoria Police and will review our own CCTV footage from the area,” the spokesperson said.

It’s unclear who is responsible for the defacement, and follows a series of attacks on public monuments including at least three Captain Cook statues that have been severely damaged around Melbourne.
